Fall 2007 Workshops with Robert Walp

 

 

Introduction to Bookbinding:

September 29, 10am to 4pm.  Participants will create three simple but elegant sewn book structures – a pamphlet stitch binding, a two section paper case binding, and a Japanese style multi-section binding. This workshop will provide an introduction to the tools and materials of the bookbinder. Emphasis will be on folding and sewing techniques and working in harmony with the properties of various materials. $55 including materials. Held at Courthouse Gallery, limit 6 people.

 

 

Introduction to Boxmaking:

October 20, 10am to 4pm.  Learn to make a beautiful  storage box with a hinged lid from book board, paste paper and Japanese book cloth. $60 including materials. Held at Courthouse Gallery, limit 6 people.

 

 

 

Introduction to Letterpress Printing:

October 27, 10am to 4pm. Learn the basics of the Black Art.

We will set type, then print letterheads and short poems on a Vandercook proof press and a table top clam shell press. Along the way we will discuss inking, the properties of various printing papers, and where to find type and presses for our own studios.   $100 including materials. Held at Robert Walp’s studio in Chestertown, limit 6 people.

Robert Walp began his book making career in the Spring of 2000 at  Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont. He has participated in numerous book  arts workshops since then, and in 2006 earned an MFA in the Book Arts from The University of Alabama, where he received the Raymond F. McClain Book Arts Award in April 2006. His work can be found in many collections including The University of Vermont Bailey Library, the Brown University Rockefeller Library in Providence, Rhode Island, The Library of Congress, The New York Public Library, and The Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont.  Robert prints and binds books at his studio in the Adirondacks under the imprint of Chester Creek Press and teaches workshops at The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue  Mountain Lake, Blue Seed Studio in Saranac Lake, and the Town of Chester Public Library. He is a member of The Guild of Book Workers and is curator of the Book Arts Collection at the Town of Chester Public Library. Samples of his work can be seen at www.chestercreekpress.com
